What a wonderful week we have had at school this week. We learnt more about addition, continued to focus on report writing and had a fantastic trip to Hans Andersson's Recycling on Thursday. This was an extremely powerful learning experience which allowed students to connect what they are personally doing in regards to recycling to the bigger picture. We thank Victoria's (4D) father for allowing us to have a tour, as this is not something they normally do.
We have already heard some ideas from the students about how they have taken action (the final stage in the inquiry cycle), to improve their approach to conserving our planet and would also love for you to keep an ear out at home to see if your child is taking action outside of school. Next week we have 'Culture Week' and will be doing a range of activities at school regarding this. We hope to have another successful week of school next week before our Autumn break. During week 41 the children have continued to learn about different writing styles and how to write reports. In math we have been creating rules for rounding and learning about how to round in different columns. On Friday we had a special guest speaker, Brett Stein, come and talk to the grade about saving the planet. All the children seemed to be really moved by what Brett said and we strongly encourage you to ask your child about what things they would like to change to help us reduce, reuse and recycle better.
We have used two new web sites www.spellingcity.com and www.thatquiz.org to support our learning in Maths and Language in particular. These two web sites support a high degree of differentiation for your child and they will be part of our home learning from Monday. The year four students will have used both of these web sites in class and have their username and password in their reading log book. If any children are having trouble with the site please contact your child's teacher. Next week we are hoping to take the children to see a recycling plant and if you would like to come along please email your child's teacher. Have a great weekend! The Grade 4 team Students have had another varied and interesting week of learning this week! More information will be sent home on Monday about our new homework set up.
Last Wednesday we visited the Universeum as an end of unit excursion and the students certainly had a very enjoyable and educational time! We think we could have stayed there all day by how engaged and excited the students were to explore this wonderful local attraction. There is a slideshow of pictures from our visit below. This week we started our new unit of inquiry on How We Share the Planet which focuses on how we use resources and recycling. We discussed with the class what the central idea and lines of inquiry meant and started to explore the concepts in this unit. Please remember that October the 7th is a Professional Development day for all teachers so there will be no school that day. We look forward to another fantastic and differentiated week of learning next week and hope you have a safe and happy weekend! Geoff, Mike and Cath |
